ABOUT THE ARTIST

“I have always felt that art has the ability to lift us out
of one place and take us to another.”
  -   Evelyn Berde

Evelyn grew up in the old “West End” of Boston, a neighborhood
of European, African-American and Latin immigrants. Red brick
buildings, smoke stacks, the Mass General Hospital, and
amazing, lively characters filled the neighborhood.

On her trips to the market, the sounds, smells, and images
inspired her – the sawdust on the butcher’s floor, the
whistling, gigantic teapot in Scollay Square, the trees on the
Boston Common, the colorful languages she heard every day.

Today, many of her images and colors reflect her passion for
Native American, Southeast Asian, Latin American and African
Art, but also her paintings still somehow recall for her the
world she lived in as a child in the West End.

Evelyn brings much of her life experiences to each painting.
Her work resembles the patchwork of her childhood and adult
life, as an artist, mother, wife, and teacher. Evelyn
incorporates her connection to people and their “stories,” her
surroundings in everyday life, inspirations, and dreams.

As a parent of multicultural children it has been important to
create a home that includes textiles, colors and images that
reflect the diversity of her family and her neighborhood. Her
home and studio invite people to relax, to take a breath, to
immerse themselves in a landscape of soothing hues and
textures.

Evelyn can see the beauty in even the simplest of things; a
bowl of fruit is transformed into a life story. “I am
transformed by a Mexican ceramic bowl filled with mangoes on a
vibrant Indian cloth. My hope is that others will find
inspiration in my paintings, and gain a newfound appreciation
for culture, texture, and nature in the world around them.”
